Set up your Portrait display in minutes
Download the App
Get the Paper Portrait Connect app from the App Store:
1. Register Your Device
Before you can send content to your eInk display, you need to connect it to WiFi and register it with the app:
- Open the Portrait app and sign in or create an account.
- Tap the + button to add a new device.
- Enter your WiFi network name and password. Note: Only 2.4GHz or dual-band networks are supported.
- Tap Connect & Register Device.
- Hold the top of your iPhone to the back of the Portrait device, near the top. The app will send WiFi credentials via NFC and receive the device ID.
- Wait for the device to connect to WiFi. A 6-digit verification code will appear on your Portrait display.
- Enter the verification code shown on your device to confirm ownership.
- Optionally give your device a name (e.g., "Kitchen Display" or "Office Portrait").
- Tap Verify & Register to complete the setup.
2. Display a Custom Image
Show your favorite photos on your eInk display:
- Tap on your registered device from the device list.
- Select Show Image from the display options.
- Choose a photo from your library.
- The image will be optimized for your eInk display and sent automatically.
Tip: High-contrast images with clear subjects look best on eInk displays.
3. Display Custom Text
Show personalized messages, quotes, or reminders:
- Tap on your device and select Show Text.
- Enter your message in the text field.
- Tap Send to display it on your device.
4. Display a QR Code
Generate and display scannable QR codes:
- Tap on your device and select Show QR Code.
- Enter any URL or text you want to encode.
- Tap Generate to create and display the QR code.
5. Set Up Scheduled Updates
Keep your display fresh with automatic updates. Premium features include:
Bible Verses
Receive daily inspirational scripture on your display:
- Select Regular Bible Verse from the options.
- Choose your update interval (1 min to Daily).
- Tap Start to begin receiving verses.
Live Clock
Display the current time with automatic updates:
- Select Clock from the display options.
- Choose your timezone and update interval.
- Tap Start to display the clock.
NYC Transit (MTA)
Get real-time subway and bus arrival times:
- Select MTA Updates from the options.
- Search for and select your subway or bus stop.
- Choose how often to refresh (1-30 minutes).
- Tap Start to display live arrivals.
Stock Prices
Track your favorite stocks with live updates:
- Select Stock Prices from the options.
- Search for and select a stock symbol.
- Choose your update interval.
- Tap Start to display live prices.
Weather Updates
Display current weather conditions for any major US city:
- Select Weather Updates from the options.
- Search for and select your city.
- Choose your update interval.
- Tap Start to display the weather.
6. Managing Your Devices
- Rename: Tap the device name to edit it.
- Change Icon: Tap the device icon to choose a new one.
- Pause/Resume: Tap the power icon to toggle the device on or off.
- Update WiFi: Tap the WiFi icon to change your device's network. Enter new credentials, tap "Write to Device", and hold your iPhone to the back of the device.
- Delete: Swipe left on a device to remove it from your account.
